Paula Mandell

“A photo of my late Grandmother, Paula Mandell, after her liberation from Bergen-Belsen.” Says Michael V. Gruberpaula mandell belsen

“We recently found this photo. A colleague of my fathers’ showed my father this photo a few years ago without knowing it was my father’s mother in law.”

ED: How fabulous to put a name to this well known photo. This famous photo doesn’t have a date. It is referenced from 1st to 4th May and is clearly in the cleaner, better conditions away from the original Belsen camp. The actual date may be several weeks later. My grandfather, Reg Price, was a liberator at Belsen and was in the womens camp for 5 weeks leaving two days after the last hut was burnt down. They got everyone out that they could to better conditions but never had the opportunity to see so many of these wonderful people get better. The unit (113th LAA) left Belsen not really knowing if they had made a difference.
He would have liked this photo of Paula too. We hope to find out more about her in due course.

This archive has been established after my own relative, Reg Price, took part in the liberation and subsequent humanitarian effort of Bergen Belsen in April 1945. Reg produced this famous sign at Belsen. As part of the 113th DLI, Reg and his comrades were at Belsen for 5 weeks and left when the last hut was empty and ceremonially burnt down. This archive compiles all available resources to build a lasting tribute to all the men and women who helped - any unit, any nationality. If you have a relative, or any info, on the relief effort at Belsen, we’d love you to please get in touch. Email us: liberator@belsen.co.ukThank you Nick Price CreativesFacebookTwitter
