Harold Pearsall
My dad, Harold Pearsall, 97, landed on Juno beach during the D-Day landings as an anti-tank gunner and took part in the assault on Caen.
He was also part of Operation Market Garden and fought all the way into Germany where he ended up at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp shortly after it had been liberated. He was charged with standing guard over the camp commandant and subsequently they were tasked with burning the place to the ground.
Dad didn’t open up too much about those experiences but he was so proud of his medals. For the 70th anniversary of D-Day we travelled to Normandy and met the Duchess of Cornwall.
